Mr. Agarwal,

Cost is no probllem for saudi Arabia; and, when money is available, logistics could be tamed.

Saudi Arabia should seriously think on this option. it's rich in sunshine. Once concave mirrors have been installed, they will produce ennergy free of cost for decades free of cost as sunshine is free!

At least, Saudi Arabia should start generating electricity through solar means for its domestic use. Its manpower will be introduced to the technology used in such projects. Then, they may move forward and explore more avenues.

Also, why shouldn't Pakistan and India think on the same lines and generate electricity thru concentrated solar power!

Thank you Azfar for your comment.

I am glad you took the time to read, and provide the feedback. Yes, for domestic consumption Saudi Arabia should produce Solar energy locally and use it. It is hard to justify (cost and logistic) that Solar energy can be exported with a differentiation. This is really an investment opportunity for Saudi Arabia to leverage their financial resources. Unlike OIL, the raw material for SUN energy is available everywhere so export will be a big issue.

Best,

Bipin Agawral

Congratulations for a nice article!

I would rather say: Why should Saudi Arabia invest in other countries? Why shouldn't it develop its own resources, generate solar energy on the pattern of Desertec in its vast desert and export the same to other countries besides meeting its own needs.

It is interesting that Nouriel Roubini just changed his prediction about the economy. This was predicted by this article that he will change his opinion.

These are great points.

All the issues raised are real. Solution will come.

SOLAR Gold Rush is real. It is a ten year time frame.

Hi Bipin,
Good data points. Like to add following:
1. the Solar technology today - I seriously doubt how green it is - considering the silicon waste and the energy used to manufacture the panels. and the batteries needed to store that energy - like the hybrid car batteries are indeed a longr term drain on our environment with all teh pollutants in them. yes, hopefully one day it will become green.

2. I too wonder how US will continue to stay as a leader for ever ? In past yes, innovations and consumption soared this country. Going forward - Is it eventually teh military might that will prevail in maintaining value of Dollar ? Keep in mind - foreign investments liek land/housing and T bills are heavily tied to military might.

3. besides focusing on energy sources, the world can benefit a lot from focusing on reducing consumption and living within means. Reduce the amount of food on american plates (compareit w othe countries). Reduce or eliminate large scale meat farming - they over consume grain to produce a fraction of meat and use excessive water and pollute teh air with methane.
